Newtown - December 2008

This image for me typifies the beauty of black & white photography. I was drawn to the strong lead in lines of the boats leading up to the boathouse, but the colours of the boats were quite garish.

The foreground dinghy was green and the first upturned one was bright red - two colours which can be quite jarring when placed in close proximity, especially as the red one was further away. Red objects always appear closer than anything else in an image (the short wavelength of red light excites the eye more so red objects are quickly noticed) and this gave an unpleasant optical illusion in the colour version.

But a monochrome conversion allowed me to concentrate in the print what drew me to the image in the first place - the strong composition combined with the contrast of textures in the image.
